The profession of nursing is a very lucrative one, considering the kind of options that students pursuing a career in medicine have. In a country like India where medical facilities are evolving, there is a huge demand for qualified nurses. And the demand keeps increasing not just in the metropolitan cities but also in Tier II, Tier III and rural areas as well. Yet, many youngsters after completing BSc. Nursing, are clouded by the decision to either pursue further studies or grab the first job offer that lands in their lap.
We have decided to share top 10 career options after completing your nursing degree in India.
1. MBA- Hospital Administration
This is a full-time 2-year course that enables enterprising job opportunities in Corporate hospitals and other allied organisations. Though this degree can be earned online, yet it is advised that a regular programme is opted for. A Common Admissions Test (CAT) followed by Group Discussion (GD) and Interview paves the way for admissions to some prolific institutes.
2. Nursing Advisors to the Indian Government
Central government provides a lot of opportunities to nurses who have graduated with BSc. Though there is an entrance exam that one would be required to appear for. Also, in some cases and interview is conducted for the same. Having a job like this offers a good salary and other benefits.
3. MHA- Master of Health Administration
The admission to this course, which is offered by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), is through entrance exam and an interview. Campus placements are also done through TISS which makes this course fruitful for the aspirants. The admission to this course is also offered by some other private colleges through direct admissions.
4. Medical Transcription/Medical Writing/ Medical Coding, etc.
This is a field where your communication skills are required to be great. Since most of these jobs are offered by offshore companies, so you may be required to work odd hours as well. But the jobs offer excellent perks and salaries. If you have a flair for language and can transcribe different accents or foreign documents then this the job for you.
It is a myth that MBBS after nursing is not possible. In fact, some state exams have a seat reserved usually for BSc Nursing. This opens up great avenues for students who are willing to go the long haul. A doctor’s degree is worth earning.
6. MPH- Master of Public Health
Admission to this course is through entrance exams. BSc Nursing students with an experience of two years can apply for this course. The best part about this is that your job prospects open up to UNO, WHO and other NGOs.
7. APN- Advanced Practitioner Nurse
This is a 2-year course that can be done in some European countries. Not only is it a great avenue for your medical career but your educational fees can be subsidized as well if you are a permanent employee.
8. MSc Clinical Research
This is an opportunity that enables opportunities as a clinical researcher in Corporate hospitals. The qualification can be earned either through distance learning or regular classes.
9. Corporate Hospitals
This is an irresistible offer that most nurses opt for since it is high-paying and gives the flexibility to choose your shifts (in some cases). Having an experience of over two years elsewhere can land you a nursing job in such hospitals and opens up avenues to work abroad as well.
10.MSW- Master of Social Work
This profile aids in extending a job in various European countries and the United States of America. Though this is a high paying job and there is a major demand in this field yet you can still opt to work as a Registered Nurse (in the US of A) which is a higher paying job. Regardless, the opportunities in Medicine and Psychiatry are vast and lucrative.
