Mechatronics is design of computer controlled electromechanical systems and can be seen as a modern mechanical engineering design. This designing process is an integration of mechanical, computer and electrical engineering coupled with amalgamation of systems and technical project management. One such example is a surgical robot that performs precise mechanical work under erudite sensory and electronic control. Mechatronics involves a systems approach rather than component approach, so that students can design a holistic system instead of individual parts.
The program is conducted by department of mechanical engineering and the courses differs significantly from the traditional mechanical engineering program. The designing of this program has come from valuable efforts of faculties from mechanical engineering, and electrical and computer engineering. Hence students in this program can expect an interdisciplinary program enabling them to pick courses from other departments as well. This assists students in understanding of holistic approach to systems design.
The program is competitive and involves a research focus. Students are expected to work on a project which should be presented towards the end of the term. The students in this program need to have inquisitive bent of mind and innovative approach to solutions. Graduates from this program can find themselves employed across several companies like automobile, biomechanics, nanotechnology, material engineering, to name a few.
